Tetra Pak se inició a comienzos de la década del 50, con el desarrollo de un sistema de envasado para la leche líquida. Desde entonces ha llegado a ser uno de los principales sistemas suplidores de envases de cartón para leche, jugos, bebidas y otros productos no carbonatados a nivel mundial en más de 165 países, comenzando sus operaciones en Venezuela en el año de 1981.
En el año 1961, Tetra Pak introduce al mercado el primer envase de cartón aséptico del mundo, conocido hoy en día como “Larga Duración”, en el que se incorporó una capa de aluminio al empaque, y se trató el producto con un proceso de esterilización a alta temperatura (tratamiento UHT).
Esta combinación “proceso + envase” permitió que la leche y otros alimentos líquidos perecederos extendieran su vida útil durante meses sin necesidad de refrigeración o de conservantes, sin perder su sabor y valores nutritivos, lo cual facilitó la distribución de alimentos de forma sana y segura en todo el mundo.
Los envases de cartón Tetra Pak además de conservar los alimentos envasados en condiciones estables y adecuadas para su consumo, también cumplen una función importante para el balance y mantenimiento del ambiente siendo que pueden reciclarse separando las fibras y los demás materiales que los conforman para luego ser utilizados.
Los envases de cartón para productos pasteurizados contienen entre 80-85% de cartulina (fibras largas) y entre un 20-15% de polietileno apto para alimentos, de estos envases se recicla un 80% del material. El uso que se le da a la fibra larga es para la elaboración de papel Tisue (Papel sanitario y toallas de cocina de primera calidad) y el uso del polietileno es para la elaboración de productos plásticos de baja densidad como bases para escoba, tobos, artículos de oficina y decorativos.
Los envases de larga duración contienen 6 capas las cuales están compuestas por pulpa de papel (75%), polietileno apto para alimentos (20%) y aluminio (5%), de estos envases se recicla un 70% del material. El uso que se le da a cada material es; polietileno para la elaboración de productos plásticos de baja densidad como bases para escoba, tobos, artículos de oficina y decorativos; a la pulpa de papel para la elaboración de cajas de cartón corrugado, plantillas para zapados, bolsas de papel entre otros y el aluminio para la elaboración de pellets, y como material complementario para diferentes productos plásticos.
Del aluminio y el polietileno se producen láminas, las cuales son destinadas para la elaboración de tejas, casas para animales, codos de tubos y material decorativo.
Para el reciclaje es mejor separar los envases de cartón de los desechos orgánicos domiciliarios y después clasificarlos, separándolos de otros materiales reciclables si fuera necesario, para lo cual se requiere un sistema de recolección y clasificación a un costo adecuado, así como una capacidad de reciclaje bien establecida. Se necesita una buena logística para llevar los envases al reciclador antes de que la fibra se comience a deteriorar
El proceso de reciclaje de los envases Tetra Pak en Venezuaela, se esta incentivando a través del desarrollo de un programa que se ha denominado “La Ruta Ecológica del envase de Cartón Tetra Pak”, y a través del cual deseamos dar a conocer los beneficios de reciclar nuestros envases:
•Por cada tonelada de papel reciclado se ahorra la tala de unos 17 árboles, entre 100.000 a 150.000 litros de agua, se ahorra en consumo de energía aproximadamente un 65 %.
•Usando papel para reciclar se reduce la contaminación del aire en un 73 % y en un 35 % la contaminación del agua, además de que no se ocupa espacio en el relleno de sanitario.
