¡Vamos a reciclar!

¿A qué lugar nos vamos a ir cuando no tengamos dónde almacenar la basura?, ¿acaso hay otro planeta Tierra?, ¿cuándo vamos a entender que todo lo que le hagamos al planeta puede afectarnos?. Las interrogantes de Omaira Valbuena, docente y coordinadora del programa San Francisco Recicla, encierran preocupación y sugieren la necesidad de aprender a reciclar y encaminarse a hábitos más cónsonos con el planeta.
“Creemos que es importante reciclar porque para nosotros es una alternativa a ese mercado que nos invita a consumir y a consumir, sin importar cuál es el destino de los materiales”.
Su aseveración refleja una realidad. En Venezuela, de acuerdo con cifras de la organización ambientalista Vitalis, la mala disposición de la basura es uno de los principales problemas ambientales. En el país, cerca del 80% de las 18.600 toneladas de residuos que se producen a diario son lanzados en vertederos a cielo abierto.
El reciclaje —detalló Valbuena— “consta de tres R: Reducir, reutilizar y reciclar. Se trata de reducir el consumo de energía y de productos no retornables y que se usan y se tiran de una vez. Por ejemplo, muchas presentaciones de refrescos y otras bebidas. Cada vez son menos los productos que ofrecen la posibilidad de ser retornables”.
A la acumulación de desechos, se suma el gasto de energía. Por ejemplo, refirió Ángel Viloria, presidente del Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas (Ivic), “para producir un vaso de tomar café se emplea gran cantidad de energía, y, por lo general, es usado una sola vez, quedando reflejado el consumismo propiciado por el capitalismo. Muy bien este envase puede reusarse, y prolongar así, la utilidad de un producto”.
El plástico puede tardar hasta 1.000 años en biodegradarse, sin contar la contaminación visual que supone su acumulación en parques nacionales, playas y sitios públicos.
Al referir las razones por las que se debe reciclar, Nola Fernández, experta en ingeniería sanitaria, explicó que “en los rellenos sanitarios se produce una descomposición anaerobia (sin oxígeno) de la basura. Esto genera gases que incrementan la temperatura. Quiere decir, que si disminuimos el volumen de basura en estos lugares, ayudamos a reducir la producción de gases responsables del recalentamiento de la tierra”.
El calentamiento global —destacó— “es producido por la retención de la temperatura del sol, que a su vez genera la acumulación de gases como CO², dióxido de nitrógeno, vapor de agua y H²O. A más basura más gases. Estos gases en condiciones de equilibrio son necesarios, pues de lo contrario el planeta sería helado y la vida no pudiera darse. Como estamos excediendo la cantidad de éstos, se produce el calentamiento global”.
Fernández aseguró que “si reciclamos en hogares e industrias, y clasificamos los desperdicios según su origen —cartón, vidrio, metal, materia orgánica— ayudamos a minimizar el recalentamiento de la tierra producido por los gases resultantes de la descomposición de la basura”.
El Estado debería a su vez —subrayó Fernández— “ofrecer un servicio de contenedores donde la gente pueda arrojar los desperdicios clasificándolos. Se puede hacer el reciclaje en sitio, es decir, desde el hogar, o en puntos estratégicos donde se coloquen contenedores identificados para cada material. Otra razón para el reuso de la basura es su utilidad para generar energía .
La existencia de leyes que amparan la disposición óptima de los desechos, no ha garantizado que en Venezuela exista un manejo eficiente. La Ley de Residuos y Desechos Sólidos, sancionada en 2004 , establece como“política nacional el control y reducción de la producción de residuos y desechos sólidos, así como la recuperación de la materia y la energía, con el fin de proteger la salud y el ambiente contra los efectos nocivos que pueden derivarse del manejo inadecuado”.
El artículo 46 reza a su vez que: “El ente responsable de la gestión deberá proveer los envases apropiados para el cumplimiento de los objetivos de la recolección selectiva, entendiéndose por ésta, la separación en el origen por tipo de material, e informar debidamente a la población respecto de la frecuencia de recolección de los materiales a reciclar”.
Pese a existir un marco legal moderno, en Venezuela no se ha avanzado en aspectos tan esenciales como la disposición de envases para separar el vidrio, el papel, el plástico y el aluminio. Tampoco ha existido una campaña nacional donde se difundan las ventajas del reciclaje, tema esencial en la tarea de formar ciudadanos ambientalmente responsables.
¿A qué otro planeta nos vamos a mudar cuando terminemos de deteriorar a éste? No hay otro planeta tierra.
Cultura: Hacerse el hábito de reutilizar materiales constituye uno de los principios más importantes del reciclaje.

El ahorro de energía, la necesidad de un uso racional del agua y la importancia de los ecosistemas son, en esencia el tema de la campaña destinada a sembrar mejores ciudadanos en Maracaibo y en la región.
